RRTS is proposed on the basis of the study titled ‘Identification of Rail Projects for commuter travel in Delhi & NCR, commissioned by Northern Railways. The main aim of the study is to wean away the commuters from road-based system to an optimal multi-modal mass transport system.
RRTS is expected to benefit Delhi/NCR, particularly Gurgaon, Manesar, Dharuhera,
Rewari & Alwar. This corridor is 180 km long and estimated to carry 6.9 lakh people daily by 2016, which will go up to 15.1 lakh by 2041 from Delhi – Alwar. 141 km of this stretch will run underground and rest on the elevated track. Unlike metro trains, where stations are at a distance of 1-2 km, these high-speed corridors will have stations at a distance of 5-10 km. Delhi-Alwar line will start from ISBT, Kashmere Gate in Delhi and will cover the whole distance only in 117 min. approx.
The coaches will be bigger in size with more luggage space and initially, the train will operate with three coaches at a speed of 60 km per hour and will run on broad gauge. And according to the feasibility study, the frequency of the trains will be five minutes. Feeder services would be provided at respective stations to help with passenger movement living in the suburbs. It will prompt more development in these satellite towns.Thepriceofland andrealestatedevelopmentaroundthesecorridorsisalso expected to go up. The government itself is planning to develop pockets of real estate along the high-speed rail corridors.
One of the key projects of NCRPB (National Capital Region Planning Board) is the development of Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), connecting Delhi with key cities in NCR region. The RRTS project is expected to facilitate quick commute for passengers between Delhi and NCR towns. The RRTS trains are expected to have a design speed of 180 kmph with high acceleration and deceleration.
